Jet Jaguar is Michael Upton. Born and raised in Wellington, NZ, Michael has been making music since 1991, when he was inspired by a friend's Mum's MIDI set-up! Paging Dr Freud! Jet Jaguar arrives from the sampledelic world of funk, hip-hop and dub. Genres that have always been reflexive: borrowing riffs, drum patterns and vocals from the past in order to funk them up, to create, and move forward. Upton utilises a similar approach, lacing tracks with old school samples, odd radio samples and nano-blips from who knows where. Low-end bass theory informs the sub-structure of the Jet Jaguar sound. Inspired by 70s dub producers and hip-hop he sees no point in emulating them, instead borrowing aspects of the dubspace programme to pan, echo and stretch space and time.
Contrary to his musical precision Mr Upton is the owner of messiest studio in the world. Mixing desk balanced upon a derelict pile of vinyl, speakers are plonked randomly on top of old PC hardware while an array of cables and wires race to the finishing line of the world's biggest knot contest.
Jet Jaguar is a musical hero in Wellington. He is involved the band 'Dub Connection'. His remix of their track 'All the Goodness' was voted best unreleased tune of 2000 by the bNet Awards (New Zealand's independent radio network's annual music awards) as well as number 2 on Radio Active's (local indie radio station) song of the year 2000 chart. Jet Jaguar is currently exploring dub at the cellular level, while searching for leftfield poets for some hip-hop be-bop reconfiguration.
Summary: Virgo, intense, geeky, articulate, email and record ordering addict, does 'everything' with E-Mu ESI sampler. All music saved strictly to floppy disk.
