also it occurs to me there is a pattern to production:

1. sound capture/creation - sampling, mic's, synths etc
2. sequencing - patterns, phrases and songs
3. mixing - effects, eq'ing
4. final mix
5. mastering

"The trouble being that when using a computer to record onto steps 1-4 become merged and now I'm forever adding new sounds and re-editing mixing etc, etc. Nowdays there seems no such thing as a final mix. I start looking forward to mastering as once that's done nothing can be changed!"
